Ecodistrict Portland

As Yuliya stated, the development of Portland’s ecodistricts include specific projects that are the catalyst for integral development of an existing area. These projects allow sustainability within the ecodistricts because they are “small enough to innovate quickly and big enough to have a meaningful impact.” Similar to the flower festival in Girona that uses architects, artists, and other neighborhood members to create the sculptures, the projects will need the skills of many diverse community members, including municipalities, developers, landowners, businesses, and neighbors. The input of all these members will generate a positive output for these members as well, creating an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable loop.

**Materials Management demonstrates the potential for more economically sound projects and understanding of place through regional (or neighborhood) materials.
